When shoppers bag loose produce or unwrapped bakery items directly in-store, the inner surface of the bag contacts the food. Food-grade HDPE is made from virgin resin without the recycled content or processing aids that can migrate into food. If your retailer customer is audited by a food safety body, a food-grade declaration on the carrier bag is often part of the paperwork they need. We will provide a material declaration on request.
Clear HDPE film is not optically clear in the way PET or cellophane is — there is a slight milky cast, especially as gauge increases. At 0.01–0.06 mm the contents and any applied labels are clearly visible and scannable. Above 0.12 mm some haze appears. If very high clarity is critical — for example a pre-packed herb bag — consider a thinner gauge or ask us to run a clarity sample at your target thickness before committing.
Three things decide whether a roll feeds cleanly: the spindle spacing on the rack, the tab geometry that holds the next bag open, and the perforation strength. We set the perforation so a filled bag tears away in one pull without the roll unspooling, but that balance shifts with gauge, so tell us the rack you use and the gauge you want and we will match the perforation to it. Plain rolls can be sent ahead of a printed run so you can test throughput on the actual rack first.
Standard HDPE vest bags are not designed for hot food. HDPE softens above about 80 °C and the bag will lose its shape if filled directly from a heated counter. For takeaway hot food applications — rotisserie chicken, chips, warm deli items — we can specify a higher-density or co-extruded film; tell us the fill temperature and we will advise.
Single-material HDPE vest bags are accepted in most supermarket soft-plastic film collection programmes. They are not suitable for mixed-plastics kerbside bins. If your retail customer requires the correct recycling on-pack messaging we will add the appropriate soft-plastics drop-off icon to the print design.
