Greaseproof paper is a densely calendered paper that resists the penetration of oils and fats at the surface. Standard food-service paper will soak through with grease from a fried portion in minutes, leaving a stained bag and an unpleasant handover. Greaseproof holds oil at the surface for long enough to serve — typically 15–30 minutes for fried items. For very oily food held for longer (heated display cabinets, for example) we would recommend a heavier grease-barrier treatment and would ask about the product, portion size and holding time before confirming suitability.
The thickened greaseproof construction gives more puncture resistance than standard greaseproof, but skewers with sharp metal tips can still pierce through under pressure. Most operators fold the tip of the skewer into the bag before closing it, or use a bamboo skewer that is less likely to puncture. If your skewer format is particularly aggressive — long metal spikes, for instance — we can specify a heavier-gauge paper or add a PLA liner panel on the base and sides. Tell us the skewer type and length and we will advise.
Offset gives the sharpest print quality on paper at short-to-medium runs — fine text, tight registration and Pantone spot colours all hold better than on a flexo press at the same volume. Gravure is better suited to long continuous runs on film substrates, and the cylinder set-up it demands is rarely the right answer for a takeaway paper bag. Where a single design runs as a standing annual programme we will look at gravure and tell you where the changeover starts to make sense.
Greaseproof paper is paper at its core but the grease-barrier treatment affects its recyclability and compostability. Standard greaseproof paper is generally not accepted in paper recycling streams because the oil and barrier treatment contaminate the pulp. Some home composting programmes accept unsoiled greaseproof paper. We do not carry a compostability certificate on this product. If end-of-life claims are important for your brand, discuss this with us at enquiry stage and we can assess options such as a certified-compostable PLA window insert or a fully compostable kraft construction.
Lead time from artwork sign-off is 10 to 12 working days. The factory works a six-day week, so that equates to roughly two calendar weeks from proof approval to bags on a pallet. For a first order with a new design we recommend sending final artwork 14 days before you need the bags in-store to allow for any minor artwork adjustments before production is released.
