The main variables are water activity, oil content and oxygen sensitivity of your product. Popcorn and crisps are low-moisture but fat-containing — a PET/VMPET/PE structure with good moisture and light barrier is usually sufficient for 3–6 months at ambient. Chocolate requires a better moisture and oxygen barrier, typically PET/AL/CPP. Nuts with high oil content and a long ambient shelf life benefit from a PA/AL/PE structure that adds puncture resistance. Send us your product and target shelf life and we will recommend the lightest structure that holds it.
The laminates use food-contact grade resins converted under our BRCGS, HACCP, ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 systems, held to FDA 21 CFR 177, and the food-contact declaration is issued per structure with the order. Where the bags are sold into the EU, we arrange migration testing at an accredited laboratory — including one your retail buyer nominates — and issue the declaration against that order. Advise us of your target market at enquiry stage and we will include the documentation with the sample.
Digital carries no cylinder tooling and turns around in about 7 days, which suits a trial batch or a seasonal design you may still revise. Gravure needs a cylinder engraved per colour and about 15 days for a first run, but it holds tighter register, lays down solid metallic and dense spot colours more cleanly, and is the right press once a design is settled and repeating. Send us the artwork and the colour count and we will tell you which press we would put it on and what that does to your lead time.
Yes, a press-to-close or slider zip can be added. It is most commonly specified for sharing-size snack bags where the consumer wants to reseal between servings. For single-portion packs — an individual chocolate bar, a single popcorn serving — the zip adds a process step without consumer benefit, and a simple tear notch is the cleaner design.
No. Metallised VMPET (vacuum-metallised polyester) is a very thin aluminium coating applied by vapour deposition — it gives the metallic appearance and partial barrier improvement but does not provide the full oxygen and moisture barrier of a laminated aluminium foil ply. If your product requires maximum barrier — long ambient shelf life, oxygen-sensitive contents — specify the aluminium foil laminate structure. We will confirm the difference in barrier performance with OTR and WVTR data on request.
