Embossed bags have a textured channel pattern on the inner surface that keeps air pathways open while the sealer draws a vacuum through the bag from outside (external or clamp sealer). Smooth bags require a chamber sealer that evacuates the air from the whole chamber around the bag rather than pulling it through the film. If you own a FoodSaver, VacMaster or similar counter-top unit, you need embossed bags. If you run a bell chamber machine, use smooth bags — they give a cleaner, more consistent vacuum.
Slightly — the textured surface is marginally thinner at the channel valleys than on smooth film of the same stated thickness. In practice, for typical commercial shelf lives on meat and fish, the barrier is more than adequate. For products requiring very long shelf lives under controlled atmosphere (over 90 days), we can increase the film gauge or add an MPET or EVOH layer to compensate.
Yes. The PA/PE film is rated for sous-vide cooking at the temperatures used for most proteins — 55–85 °C for extended periods. The seal integrity holds throughout. For temperatures above 90 °C, or for pressure cooking, confirm the exact conditions with us so we can specify a film grade that suits your process.
Black bags block light, which slows photo-oxidation in fat and pigment in products like aged beef, cured charcuterie and certain fish. For a product displayed in a well-lit chilled cabinet over several days, the opaque bag reduces colour fade and rancidity onset compared with clear film. The trade-off is that the customer cannot see the product through the bag, so black packaging works best when the brand is strong enough to drive purchase without visible product.
Yes, though the retail presentation differs from an industrial pack. For retail, most brands print the bag with product photography, nutritional information and branding rather than leaving it plain. We offer gravure printing up to 10 colours, including white on black bags, and digital printing for a shorter initial run while a design is still settling.
