Foil gives absolute zero transmission of oxygen, moisture and light — no other flexible packaging material matches it. For products with a very long required shelf life (12–24 months ambient), fat-containing foods prone to rancidity, or anything where light degradation is a concern, foil is the reliable choice. The trade-off is that consumers cannot see the product inside, and the pouch cannot enter a microwave. If product visibility matters for your retail format and shelf life is under 12 months, a transparent PA/RCPP pouch may be the better fit.
No. The aluminium layer will cause arcing in a microwave and must never be used in one. This is a hard safety requirement, not a preference. Your label must carry an unambiguous 'do not microwave' warning. For reheating, the consumer should either boil the sealed pouch in water or transfer the contents to a microwave-safe bowl. If microwave convenience is a key part of your consumer proposition, the transparent PA/RCPP retort pouch is the correct structure to specify.
The structure is designed for high-temperature autoclave sterilisation in the 121 °C range, which is the standard retort cycle for commercially shelf-stable low-acid foods. It is also boilable at 100 °C. If your process runs above 121 °C or requires a specific Fo value, send us the full retort profile — autoclave temperature, over-pressure, dwell time and cooling step — so we can confirm the sealant specification before you order.
The foil laminate itself imposes no finite shelf life barrier — the zero-OTR construction maintains conditions indefinitely from a packaging standpoint. Actual product shelf life depends on the retort process achieving the required Fo value and on the initial fill quality. Properly sterilised low-acid products in a foil retort pouch routinely achieve 2–5 year ambient shelf life. Your food technologist must validate the Fo value for your specific product, not the packaging manufacturer.
Every delivery carries a food-grade material declaration written against the exact structure supplied, plus our ISO 9001 certificate and the seal-integrity records for the run. Where the destination market or your buyer asks for migration testing, we arrange it at an accredited laboratory — including one you nominate — and issue the declaration before the goods ship.
