Bakery and snack packaging

Bakery and snack packaging pulls in two directions. Bread needs to breathe or it goes soggy; crisps and nuts need to be sealed tight or they go soft and rancid. The same factory makes both, but almost nothing about the specification is shared.

Bread wants to breathe, snacks want to be sealed

A fresh loaf is still releasing moisture and warmth when it is bagged. Seal it in a tight barrier film and the crust softens overnight. Micro-perforated BOPP solves this: the perforations let water vapour out while the film still keeps the loaf clean and handleable. Wicket bags on a header make this fast on an in-store or industrial bagging line.

Crisps, nuts, popcorn and chocolate are the opposite problem. Fat oxidises, so oxygen ingress is the enemy and the answer is a foil or metallised structure with a tight seal, often flushed with nitrogen. Getting these two confused is the single most common specification error we see in bakery and snack enquiries.

Formats across the category

  • Micro-perforated wicket bread bag — breathable BOPP for loaves and rolls.
  • Back-seal pillow bag — the highest-throughput snack format, runs on vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal.
  • Resealable stand-up zip pouch — for share bags and multi-serve nuts, dried fruit and confectionery.
  • Flat-bottom box pouch — premium shelf presence for granola, sugar and specialty snacks, with an optional carry handle.
  • Kraft window pouch — paper exterior with a clear panel, the default for artisan and health-food positioning.
  • Greaseproof paper gusset bag — for hot, oily takeaway items where plastic would sweat.

Barrier, shelf life and the crisp test

Snack shelf life is mostly a fat-oxidation clock, so the oxygen transmission rate of the structure drives the date code. Texture is a separate clock driven by water vapour transmission — a crisp that is chemically fine but has picked up moisture is still a returned pack.

Structures we quote most often: foil laminate for the longest ambient life, metallised PET for near-foil barrier at lower cost, clear PET/PE where the product has to be visible, and mono-PE where recyclability is the priority and the shelf life target allows it.

Print and shelf appearance

Snack and confectionery is a shelf-shout category. We print up to 10 colours in gravure with registration accuracy within 0.2 mm, and finish with matte or gloss lamination, soft-touch varnish, spot UV, embossing, foil stamping or holographic laser film. Digital and flexo cover seasonal SKUs and shorter runs where gravure cylinders are not justified.

Compostable and recyclable options

Bakery and snack is where compostable film is most often requested, and it is also where it works best — short shelf life, low fat content, strong retail messaging. Our PLA/PBAT structures are certified to EN 13432. Where shelf life rules that out, mono-PE keeps the pack recyclable, and PCR content lowers virgin plastic with a practical ceiling before optics start to drift.

Choosing between the three is a shelf-life question before it is an environmental one, which is why we quote measured barrier figures rather than a label.

Compliance

Produced under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, with BRC Global Standard and ISO 22000 for food safety, US FDA food-contact compliance, EN 13432 for compostable structures and GRS for recycled content. Inspection to AQL 1.5 with full batch traceability.

Frequently asked questions

Why are bread bags perforated?

A fresh loaf keeps releasing moisture after bagging. Micro-perforated BOPP lets water vapour escape so the crust stays firm, while the film still keeps the loaf clean.

What packaging keeps crisps crisp?

A tight oxygen and moisture barrier — foil or metallised PET laminate with a reliable seal, usually nitrogen flushed. Texture loss is driven by water vapour transmission, which is a separate specification from the oxidation clock.

Can I get compostable snack packaging?

Yes. Our PLA/PBAT structures are certified to EN 13432. They suit short shelf life and lower fat content; for long-dated high-fat snacks we would usually recommend mono-PE instead.

Do you make greaseproof paper bags for hot food?

Yes — greaseproof paper gusset bags for BBQ, skewers and takeaway, offset printed, plus foil-lined kraft for hot sandwiches.

What is your sampling lead time?

Custom samples are ready in 5–7 working days.
